ABSTRACT

·AIM: To quantitatively assess the influence of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) on the length of lens zonules and anterior chamber depth (ACD). ·METHODS: The medical records of 87 cataract patients (88 eyes ) were retrospectively reviewed. Forty- three patients (44 eyes) with previous PPV were included in the study group, and 44 patients (44 eyes) without a history of PPV were served as control group. Length of zonules and anterior chamber depth ( ACD ) were quantitative analyzed based on the data from ultrasonic biomicroscopy (UBM) and IOL Master examinations respectively. ·RESULTS: The average length of zonules in study and control group were 1. 09 ± 0. 24mm and 0. 78 ± 0. 22mm, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0. 05). The ACD of the two groups were 3. 25 ± 0. 39mm and 3. 44 ± 0. 48mm, respectively, and a statistical difference was observed (P<0. 05). The length of zonules in the control group was positively correlated with the ACD (r=0. 468, P=0. 001), however, this was not the case in the study group (r=0. 173, P=0. 263). ·CONCLUSION: Previous vitrectomy may cause changes in zonular length, which may imply a possibly weakened zonules, especially for patients with the axial length less than 29mm. The change in anterior chamber depth in patients with previous PPV may not be correspondent to that in the length of zonules. The findings of our study suggest that preoperative conditions of zonules and anterior chamber should be fully understood to reduce the related complications and to improve the safety and efficiency of cataract surgery after pars plana vitrectomy.

ABSTRACT

AIM:To compare CASIA SS-1000 and Sirius OCT sweep anterior segment analyzer instrument for measuring normal corneal vertex thickness (CCT) and the thinnest corneal thickness (TCT) results the difference, correlation and consistency, and provide a theoretical basis for clinical application.METHODS:This was a prospective study.A total of 34 normal subjects were collected. The subjects were measured by the same skilled operator. The SS-1000 OCT was first used, and then the corneal thickness was measured repeatedly by Sirius anterior segment analyzer.Paired t test and Bland-Altman were used to evaluate the consistency of corneal apex and corneal thinnest point between SS-1000 OCT and Sirius anterior segment analyzer.RESULTS:The mean corneal apex measured by SS-1000 OCT and Sirius corneal topography were 517.62± 25.29μm and 518.47±27.23μm CCT,respectively. The thinnest points of SS-1000 OCT and Sirius anterior segment analyzer CCT were 513.53±25.06μ m and 515.32± 26.69μm,respectively.Paired t test showed that the difference on corneal thickness of vertex was not statistically significant (P>0.05),but the thinnest corneal thickness was statistically significant (P< 0.05).Pearson analysis of the two devices, the correlation is 0.969,0.965.The results of 95% consistency limiting analysis on the corneal vertex thickness by Bland-Altman was (-14.22μm,12.52μm),that of the thinnest corneal thickness was (-15.61μm,12.03μm),4% (3/68) was out of the 95% consistency limiting, but the thinnest corneal thickness was of a little larger differences.CONCLUSION:SS-1000 OCT measurement of CCT and Sirius anterior segment analyzer is highly consistent,in clinical work can be considered alternative, but the thinnest point of the cornea can not be replaced each other.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo explore the association of the Thr241Met polymorphism of X-ray cross-complementing group 3 (XRCC3) gene with genetic susceptibility to aflatoxin B1(AFB-1)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)in Guangxi population.

METHODSWe conducted a hospital-based case-control study, including 257 HCC cases and 711 controls without cancers or liver diseases. The XRCC3 Thr241Met polymorphism was analyzed by PCR.

RESULTSThe XRCC3 genotypes XRCC3-Thr/Met or XRCC3-Met/Met were related with an elevated risk of HCC. The risk of HCC was associated with the number of mutant Met copies (adjusted OR were 2.20 and 8.56 for XRCC3-Thr/Met and Met/Met, respectively); moreover, there seemed to be combined effects for HCC risk between the variant genotypes and AFB1-DNA adduct levels from peripheral blood leukocytes (adjusted OR was 2.34 to 20.44, P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONThese results suggested that XRCC3 polymorphism may be associated with the risk of AFB1- related HCC among the Guangxi population, and interacts with AFB1 exposure in the development of HCC induced by AFB1.
